Kenya Rugby Union has revoked the appointment of Andrew Amonde as the strength and conditioning coach of the national seven-a-side team, Shujaa.

The separation was communicated to the former Shujaa captain in a letter dated August 9, 2026. Details of the letter remain confidential although www.thesportsnewsarena.com reliably learned that in reaching the decision, KRU invoked a clause in the contract that forbids a national coach to hold a similar role in a club.

At the moment, Amonde who recently qualified as a World Rugby Level II coach was confirmed as the head coach of Kenya Commercial Bank RFC. 

Selective Application

Although the procedure appears normal, the application is selective. For example, Carlos Katywa who is the Kabras RFC head coach has been doubling up as an assistant coach to the national 15’s team and last weekend was the forwards coach for the Kenya Under-20 side.

Previous coaches have also been able to hold club positions even after being appointed to the national team. Similarly, some of the coaches have been able to continue with their professional careers while coaching the national team.

Amonde’s appointment to Shujaa was a technical coup for a team that needed more technical expertise to complement the work done by Kevin Wambua (head coach) and his assistant Louis Kisia.  His experience as captain and credentials as a coach added to the technical pool in accordance with what was a norm in some of the top teams who compete in World Rugby Sevens tournaments. 

Technical Bench

Traditionally, Kenya’s technical bench has had a head, strength and conditioning coaches and a team manager. The USA who returned to the top tier WR Sevens competition had a back bench of 12. 

In a related development, should Amonde prefer to litigate, he could borrow a leaf from Hezborne Omollo whose unprocedural dismissal as Shabana FC saw him awarded Sh2.4 million in damages.
