Despite the massive home support and electric atmosphere at the Nyayo National Stadium during the two-day World Rugby Sevens Tier 2 tournament, the two Kenya teams Shujaa and Kenya Lionesses responded with mixed results.

Shujaa finished third behind the winners Germany and the USA while Kenya Lionesses finished a poor fifth behind an impressive Argentina, South Africa, and Spain. Both teams failed to stack up points against their opponents which may haunt them in the remaining two tournaments in Uruguay and Brazil.

By using the standard points standards used in rugby where the winner is awarded four points and a bonus for scoring four or more tries or a bonus point awarded if a team loses by less than seven points, Shujaa have a +50 points difference, Germany +35, USA +50 and Uruguay +37.

Narrow Losses

Kenya Lionesses have a tough hill to climb after narrow losses in all their four matches and a single win against Brazil. They have a -16 points difference while the winners Argentina have +23, South Africa +25, Spain +34 and China -37.

In an Instagram post, Kevin Wambua, the Shujaa head coach acknowledged support by fans but admitted the results fell short of their goals. “To Kenya Shujaa and Kenya Lionesses, let’s learn from the shortcomings and get better. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Tick the boxes and improve the 1%,” he wrote.

The statement reflected his sentiments after the opening day where the focus was to bag two wins against Uruguay and South Africa. Overall, Wambua maintains that a consistent performance is key to qualifying for the championships.

Home Tournament

Shujaa had hoped to win the home tournament to repay support by fans. “It will be a big motivation ahead of the remaining two legs. By the time we go for the next legs, we should target maximum points at home,” the coach stated in an earlier interview.

In the next two tournaments, Shujaa will be tasked with winning by large margins to improve their points tally. A suggestion by one of the fans could resolve the issue. In a social media post, the fan suggested that the team should use the speed of Partick Odongo, a lethal finisher instead of reverting to physical approach.

Most teams, especially those in Tier 1 exploit open space. Argentina has Marcos Moneta and the USA, Lucas Lacamp.
