Top seeds South Africa and hosts Kenya, the top two sides at the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens teams are on course to renew their rivalry in the final after recording impressive wins on the opening day of the competition at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa ground on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Both teams conceded no points in their opening two matches with South Africa beating Mauritius 68-0 and Zimbabwe 45-0 to top Pool A. Kenya barely broke a sweat with a signature 44-0 win over Ivory Coast and 37-0 against Ghana in Pool B.

Uganda’s Lady Cranes, the third seeds and Madagascar also won Pool C and D. Among the qualifiers, South Africa who have played at the World Rugby World Sevens Series looked impressive although coach Cecil Afrika believes the second day presented a different challenge.

Lukewarm Performance

Kenya must raise their game a notch higher after a lukewarm performance on the opening day where they just did enough to beat a spirited Ivory Coast and  Ghana. In the match against Ivory Coast, Janet Okello scored three tries with Sheila Chajira, Freshia Oduor, Edith Nariaka, Faith Livoi, and debutant Nelly Chikombe scored one try each.

The second match against Ghana saw Okello bag a brace with Grace Okulu, Oduor, Chikombe, Moreen Muritu and Chajira crossing the line once to set up a date with Zimbabwe. A win could set up a repeat of the Safari Sevens match up against Uganda’s Lady Cranes who must win against Tunisia.

In the other match up, South Africa who face Ghana are likely to meet Madagascar who must overcome Zambia.
