Following a stellar season during which Kenya Lionesses topped the World Rugby Challenger Series by winning two tournaments this year, Grace Okulu, the teams’ captain, has been signed by French sid , Racing 92.

The club competes in the second tier Elite 2 competition and a good season could see them promoted to top tier, Elite 1 Feminine. According to twofivefourrugby portal, Okulu, 27 has also played for Japan’s Nagato Blue Angels on a six-month contract in 2023. She has played for the national 7’s and 15’s teams after picking up the oval ball in Nakuru.

Attracted Scouts

Okulu who also briefly played for USA outfit Rhinos joins an increasing number of female players who have attracted scouts from some of the foreign teams. Already, Janet Okello has made a name for herself in Japan where she became the first Kenyan to play for MIE Pearls Women’s Rugby Football Club.

Uganda’s Emily Lekuru also moved to Japan on a six-month contract and plays for Hokkaido Barbarians Diana. Another Ugandan Peace Lekuru was recently signed by York Valkyrie in North Yorkshire, UK.

Another former Kenya Lionesses captain Philadelphia Olando followed a different path after being appointed the women’s coach of the United Arab Emirates national team.
