Kenya’s Morans kicked off their campaign to win the coveted Rugby Africa Sevens championship by keeping a clean plate, winning all their opening three matches at the Labourdonnais Sports Club, Mauritius on Saturday.
This development side whitha sprinkle of players from the main team Shujaa conceded only five points which was against fierce rivals Uganda, the defending champions. In their opening match, Morans overran Ivory Coast 36-0 and followed this up with a comfortable 33-0 win over Ghana.
Morans Face Nigeria
The wins saw Moran top Pool A with maximum points and shall face Nigeria in the cup quarter final on Sunday.
Similarly, South Africa’s Development Sevens team also claimed the top spot in Pool B by beating Nigeria 17-5, Zambia 33-14 and Burkina Faso 33-0. They have been paired up with Uganda in the cup quarters.
Uganda made a deliberate choice to beef up their 15’s team with seasoned 7’s players a gamble which may coost them a slot in the World Rugby Challenger Series.
Hosts Mauritius came close to winning their only match but were unable to defend a 12-0 lead against Tunisia and lost 12-19. Ghana served the only upset on Saturday with a stunning 17-7 win over Uganda.
