Chipu, the Kenya under-20 rugby team have a date with debutants the Netherlands, 2023 runners-up Uruguay and the winner between USA and Canada in Pool B of the World Rugby under-20 trophy competition to be hosted by Scotland from JUly 2 to July 17, 2024.
Pool A which was decided at the beginning of March has Samoa, the Oceania champions, hosts Scotland, and two other Asian qualifiers Japan and Hong Kong China.
Chipu booked their flight to Scotland after beating Zimbabwe 28-13 in the final of the Rugby Africa under-20 Barthes Trophy at Harare Sports Club on April, 24.
In the final, Zimbabwe, the junior Sables who were on course to win their third straight Africa under-20 title scored two unanswered tries by Tawana Nyashabwane and Edward Sigauke for a 10-0 lead. Keny replied with Iddo Kuta, Michael Wamalwa and Patrick Wainaina. James Olela kicked over one conversion as Chipu led 17-10 at the break.
On resumption, Alela stroked over a penalty and skipper Andycole Omolo scored a try to stretch the lead 25-13. Phil Okeyo kicked over a penalty for a 28-13 win for Chipu to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2021.
Simon Jawichre, the Chipu coach said the match could have gone either way but their work in set pieces prevailed. Herbert Mensah, the Rugby Africa president congratulated Zimbabwe for hosting an ‘extraordinary’ tournament.
