Angella Okutoyi is the new All Africa Games women’s singles champion after overcoming Egypt’s Lamis Abdelaziz 6-4, 6-2 in the final. Abdelaziz was seeded sixth.
She is the first Kenyan woman to win the title for the first time in 46 years. Jane Davies-Doxon claimed the mantle in 1978. The win technically qualifies the 20-year old for the Olympics in Paris in July.
There’s a caveat. She must be ranked at least in the top 400 to be eligible.
In the semi finals, Okutoyi dethroned Mayar Sheriff, another Egyptian 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5. ). Sheriff is ranked 62nd in the World.
